Floors that slope or feel bouncy in a way that's noticeably changed, rather than a longstanding quirk of an old building.
Cracks tracking around door and window corners on interior walls, which often mirror what's happening structurally, not just cosmetically.
Warning Signs From Your Building's History
Some of the most important warning signs have nothing to do with what you can currently see. A building that predates a major local seismic code update was very likely never designed against today's standards — age itself is a risk factor, independent of visible condition. A building that has never had a professional structural assessment, ever, is a building whose actual condition is genuinely unknown, not confirmed-fine. A building that's had additions or renovations — an extra floor, a converted garage, removed interior walls — may have had its load path changed in ways that were never structurally re-checked. And a building in a known high-hazard area (seismic, flood, expansive soil) carries elevated risk that visible condition alone won't reveal.
